Chapter 13

Urgent footsteps in the hallway outside, so soft no human would have noticed them had Worth up off the sofa, quickly blinking the sleep from his eyes as he held his body perfectly still in the shadows behind the door. For just one second he tore his focus away from whoever was creeping up the hallway on the other side of the front door and listened for sound from the bedroom. Thankfully, soft, steady breathing was all he heard, telling him the female was sleeping soundly. He was free to focus on the individual who’d just paused outside Law’s front door. The individual that just may die tonight if he tried to get to Law’s female.

Law jumped clear of the helicopter before the rotors even began to slow. Ducking low he ran clear of them before standing up and coming face to face with Sin.

“Welcome home,” Sin said, his voice steady and sincere, no trace of his typical sarcasm lacing his words.

“Thanks,” Law said. “Thanks for calling in the cavalry to bring us home.”

Sin nodded. “General raised the first flag for attention, then I took it and ran with it. Soon as they heard what was happening it didn’t take anything from our end to get them involved, so, can’t take the credit for that one.”

“Still… appreciate it. Where’s the General?”

“Went home shortly after he put the cavalry in touch with me. He’s just not got the energy he had before. Gives me pause.”

“Yeah, me, too. I’ll pay him a visit soon and apologize.”

“Won’t be necessary, he understands. But I’m sure he’d like to hear from you. I think he’s struggling through feeling betrayed. I’m thinking it won’t be long before he lets us know what he wants done with Roscoe.”

“Still in jail? Safely, I mean?”

“Oh yeah. Brutal and Stone are sitting heavy on security to make sure nothing happens to him until the General makes his decision.”

“Good.” Law sighed and lifted a hand to scratch his head and rub across his face, a sure sign of him being weary.

“Your woman is in your apartment. Worth is baby sitting, so don’t kill him in a blind rage when you find a male with her,” Sin said, letting Law know that there was no reason for him to hang around. It was clear he was anxious to get to Laurel. Sin could feel the anxiety even as Law stopped to speak to him. Law was doing what he had to, not what he wanted to.

“Baby sitting?” Law asked.

“Didn’t want to give her a chance to make another break for it. She’s not been left alone since arriving. Scorn deposited her at the clinic then assigned Worth to keep her company until you got back.”

Law’s brow rose.

“He was pretty angry. From what I hear he read her the riot act about making such a foolish decision and how you and the others were in jail now because of her completely incorrect perception of what was going on between the two of you.
